Michelangelo’s David was carved from a single block of marble. But many stone statues were not.
The Laocoön, one of the most famous statues surviving from antiquity, is made of six blocks stuck together so well that no one even noticed the joints. Does it matter that a statue isn’t of one piece? Would it matter if the joints WERE visible? And what about real flaws in the block?
